Industry Associations
In our business there are a number of organizations set up to help meet the needs of different industry members. For Hearth Products in Canada, we have HPBAC, WETT, APC, HRAI and don't forget the Pellet Fuels Institute. There is a National Barbecue Association of Canada and a Patio Furniture Manufacturers Association. Did I leave any out?
All of these associations have certain elements in common, for example, they are all non-profit organizations. Some are very specific in their purpose (eg. WETT is for Wood Technical Training only). Most of these organizations deal with initiatives under NRCan, Environment Canada plus various other regional and national government agencies. There is, understandably, a great deal of confusion in the market about "who does what".
With that in mind, Tex McLeod and I have set out to meet with WETT, APC and HRAI to develop increased dialogue and develop more cohesive efforts. If we are all on the same page about what the industry needs, we can help each other get it done.
This is a start and it may be easy - it may be hard - only time will tell. We will give it a good shot and let everyone know how we do.
HPBA Expo
There is a lot of excitement over the upcoming HPBA Show. I hope to see a great turnout of Canadians, especially at the "Canadian Events", including Focus Canada on Wednesday. We’ve revamped this meeting and think you’ll find it really interesting and informative. And, of course, you can’t miss the HPBAC Reception on Thursday or the Vesta Awards on Friday. This year there is Hands-On Hearth Training (HHOT) during show hours. For a nominal fee, hearth dealers will be able to get in-depth training from the best trainers in the business. Thanks to George LeBlanc of Maritime Fireplace and Zigi Gadomski of WETT BC for volunteering as trainers.
See you in Atlanta.
