Looking for a new fireplace
or stove?

If you're buying a new fireplace or stove for home heating, invest in an efficient appliance.

Natural Gas

If you have a gas log set in your masonry fireplace,  installing glass doors can reduce heat loss. Another option would be to install an efficient natural gas insert.

Gas fireplace efficiency ratings are available at the Office of Energy Efficiency website and are listed in the product literature in stores.

Wood

If you're thinking of using a wood burning appliance to reduce energy costs be sure to invest in an EPA/CSA-certified model. EPA-certified models reduce wood smoke by as much as 90 per cent and burn up to one third less wood. To ensure peak performance and safety, have your new appliance installed by a WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) certified technician.

Pellet

Pellet heat is cost-effective, price-stable, environmentally responsible and saves time. An average pellet appliance can be used as an efficient secondary heat source for an entire home or as a room heater.

Electric

For supplementary room heating an electric fireplace can be a good solution.

Save energy in your home

  • Weather strip doors, window and your attic hatch to reduce air leaks and uncomfortable drafts. In an older home, air leakage accounts for 30-40 per cent of total heat loss

  • If your home is electrically heated, replace the old style thermostat with a more accurate electronic model.

  • Turn down the temperature by 5°C overnight and when you're away. This one simple step can cut heating costs by up to 12 per cent.

  • Open blinds and curtains to allow sunshine in. This natural heat source is free.

  • Use area rugs on cold floors. If your feet are cold, your body will feel cold.

  • Service your heating equipment annually to maintain peak performance.

  • When you are not using your wood-burning fireplace, ensure the damper is closed tightly to stop outside drafts from coming in and preventing heated air from going up the flue.
